ICYMI: BIG opening coming in the former, legendary, Bar Pilar space. Get ready for The Last Straw from the folks behind Exiles/Easy Tiger Tavern (Karl Keane, Brian Hillery, Donagh Gilhooly) and Leon Kent formerly of Fadó, Red Hen and All-Purpose. EXCELLENT bona fides here so I was pretty excited when I stopped by on Friday to learn a bit more about their plans. Being a huge Bar Pilar fan, I have to admit I was a bit nervous about walking in and seeing what the space would look like. But I’m happy to share it still has those incredibly good vibes. The big bar is untouched downstairs though obviously the decor will change a bit. Think more sports themed. The Last Straw is aiming to be a proper casual neighborhood bar. I know that term can be debated/overused but anyone who has been to Exiles (U Street) or Easy Tiger (Adams Morgan) knows that these guys have earned that moniker. OK more about what they have planned for the space which they hope will be all things for all people.

The question that always gets asked: will there be TVs? YES. In fact there will be 8 TVs plus a giant projector screen. So you know what that means. SPORTS. And these are the teams The Last Straw will support – for the English Premier League (EPL) this will be a Chelsea bar (All matches will be shown with sound!) For the NFL this will be an Eagles bar. Now they are still looking for a college team to support and while I made the case for the powerhouse Miami Redhawks, they are leaving open the final choice to you guys. So let them know in the comments here and/or on socials which college team they should back.

OK in addition to the TVs and teams – on weekend nights, late night, you can expect DJs upstairs. Alright then, let’s talk menu. You can expect, “elevated bar food – simple, delicious and accessible.” Remember this is the former Bar Pilar space so they have a solid kitchen on the first floor. In addition to burgers, wings, salmon, steak frites – as an Eagles bar – you can expect a cheesesteak too.

And for draft lines, and remember there is big bar downstairs and a small bar upstairs, there will be the aforementioned Guinness plus five other taps. Think Magners, probably a Brau IPA, a lineup pretty similar to what you find at Exiles. The vibe will definitely echo the excellence of Exiles. This should be a great addition to 14th Street and it’ll be nice to have another late night option. Obviously different than Pilar but sounding like a worthy successor.
