“sounded like small, nearby explosions”

“Dear PoPville,

My wife and I live in Shaw, and last night (Tuesday) we were woken at approximately 12:30 AM, 2:00 AM, and 4:30 AM by what sounded like small, nearby explosions. These do not sound like typical aerial fireworks, as there is no initial launch noise with a secondary explosion in the air. They also do not have that similar pop and crackle fireworks tend to have. Instead — out of nowhere — they are

singular, loud booms where you can feel the vibration that seems to occur much lower to the ground. They rattle windows and trigger car alarms. I was just curious if any others have heard anything similar or could enlighten me as to what is startling us and our dog.”

Ed. Note: Loud summer explosions is a perennial query.
