Thanks to G. for passing on the super sad news from Kafe Leopold:
“THE END OF A WONDERFUL JOURNEY
To be 21 has always been a dream for those that fall short of that magical benchmark and also to those that have gone long past it.
Having been a part of Georgetown for the past 21 years,
Kafe Leopold has been absolutely the most rewarding experience for us. We feel privileged to have been a different choice for those that appreciated a short trip to Europe in DC and all the wonderful offerings of Austria.
As we have now arrived at that turning point, we believe we accomplished what we had always imagined and are ready to hang up our aprons to embark on the next life journey.
Befitting of that magical number, 21, we will bid our final farewells this June 21, 2026 (Father’s Day) so that we may begin that next sought-after chapter to smell the elderflowers, listen to the light breeze speak through the mountain trees, and watch the optimists telepathically try to convince the river trout that the bait at the end of the hook is what they want.
We wish to thank all for the support over the years and hope there will always be a positive memory of Kafe Leopold.
And remember, happiness is all about a schnitzel, Esterhazy and good company. We will miss you, but it is time to start on all those dreams now that we have hit that magical benchmark…
All the best,
Leopold”
For posterity:
“IT’S ALWAYS MORE THAN GREAT FOOD…
Take a short trip to Austria by stepping into Kafe Leopold best described as a contemporary bistro similar to those in swanky neighborhoods in Vienna with a hip mid-European vibe. The menu features traditional Austrian favorites blended at times with culinary inspirations from neighboring Central European countries. In keeping with the traditions of the finer restaurants and cafes in the center of Vienna, Kafe Leopold starts the day as a breakfast and morning hub and remains open all day from lunch throughout the evening for dinner earning the accolade from locals as the “Gem in Georgetown.” The relaxing ambiance, European-inspired design and friendly service set the stage for being the go-to place in DC whether it is for a glass of wine from our curated list, craft cocktails or a myriad of delicious choices for lunch or dinners. The setting is perfect for intimate conversations, business meetings, large groups from 10 to 80 diners, corporate events, holiday parties or relaxed social get-together either indoors or outdoors overlooking our art-fountain.”
