“Alignment at Dark Star Park”

photos by Ron Cohn

Thanks to Ron for sending:

Dark Star Park is a small urban patch in Rosslyn, bisected by a street, and easily missed. The odd oasis is home to otherworldly concrete spheres and tunnels, medal poles and pavement markings. Once a year, on Aug 1 at 9:32 am, these objects align.

The date is the anniversary of William Henry Ross purchasing the land that became Rosslyn. It is a quirky happening designed by Nancy Holt. The year I attended musicians played newaged tunes and at the appointed time the shadows matched up with the markings. In truth the actual alignment was underwhelming. However, the fact the park was designed for this convergence and experiencing the cosmic alignment in buttoned down Washington was a fun time.”
