Dear PoPville

“DC Assistance for being kicked out of your condo?!”

“Dear PoPville,

In October of 2022, I was told by my property manager to vacate my garden-level condo due to a leak which required removal of drywall. All of my belongings had to be out of my living room and bedroom to manage the leak and drywall removal. Upon removal, they found the foundation of the building had been compromised and needs substantial reconstruction. The foundation wall was improperly reinforced when a real estate developer cut into the footings to flip the space into condos in the 80’s.

The HOA Board is *slowly* working on the issue and getting assessments from engineers and contractors to do the work. VERY. SLOWLY.

While the remaining tenants and unit owners are still occupying the building, I have been displaced from my home (as it still does not have any drywall due to initial leak/moisture leaking from cracks in foundation). I’m living in Pennsylvania, paying additional rent, commuting over two hours to work in DC, still paying my mortgage and being required to pay my HOA fee (including utilities) without any financial assistance or reimbursement from my insurance, the HOA board, or property management.

Reaching out to see if anyone knows if DC offers any assistance programs for homeowners displaced due to construction projects?! It’s been 8 months since I’ve been displaced from my home and they haven’t even submitted for a building permit yet. By the end of this, it will be many, many months, if not years, that I am paying for a home which I cannot occupy by no fault of my own.

Any good condo law/real estate/insurance attorney recommendations would also be appreciated!”
