“Dear PoPville,
I have lived in DC for several years in a great group house but at some point soon I want to move out on my own. For every craigslist posting I’ve responded to that’s in my price range I’ve gotten a request for specific information (name, contact, job, current area, etc), and then a message back saying that they’re unable to schedule a viewing until later,
but I can secure the apartment with the down payment (first month rent and security deposit) and get my money back if I’m not interested after viewing. This obviously seems like a scam but I’m wondering – are any of these postings real? Is it possible to get a nice one-bedroom in the city under $1800? Or should I stay with my roommates until I can afford over $2k in rent?“
