Tonight: “The American Pops Orchestra is bringing Broadway hits with a modern twist to the Plaza at CityCenter from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.” and check out the new Coneflower Canopy by Phaan Howng

From a press release:

“APO: The APO, well known for reimagining American popular music through non-traditional orchestra settings, brings musicians and the community together at CityCenterDC on June 16th from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. Orchestrations by Conor Keelan include “Almost Like Being in Love,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “On the Street Where You Live,” “If I Loved You/Will You Still Love Me,” “Whatever Lola Wants,” “Defying Gravity,” “Popular,” “9 to 5,” and “Climb Every Mountain.” Most recently APO has been featured in more than twelve national broadcasts on PBS, with programs ranging from American Roots to a complete re-imagining of the musical WICKED.

CONEFLOWER CANOPY: Coneflower Canopy is part of CityCenterDC’s mission to bring art to the property and uplift local creatives. The summer installation, curated by Latela Curatorial specifically for Palmer Alley, adds an enchanting place for patrons and passers-by to enjoy while strolling through CityCenterDC. Coneflower Canopy is one component of CityCenterDC’s summer programming. You can also expect art, music, bubble shows, spectacular al fresco dining, and of course the best shopping in the city.

The coneflower, a flower in the Echinacea family, is a drought-tolerant, endangered species native to the mid-Atlantic region. For local artist Phaan Howng, Coneflower Canopy represents the need to prioritize the health of our earth. The programming around the art will help educate the public on how to integrate local ecology into at-home gardens.

WHO: Phaan Howng is a multidisciplinary artist who is local to the DC area. Howng’s artwork has deep roots connected to the earth and her work highlights how local ecology impacts daily life. Howng utilizes painting, sculpture, and installation art to best depict her message. Howng’s art was recently featured in the exhibits ‘The Succession of Nature’ at the Baltimore Museum of Art and in ‘The Long Conversation’ at the Smithsonian Arts and Industry Museum.

ACTIVITIES: Curated by Latela Curatorial for CityCenterDC, Coneflower Canopy comes with activities amongst the art installation that will sprout up throughout the summer months.

REWILD, a DC-based plant shop that seeks to help people create a sense of retreat using indoor plants, will host a workshop featuring echinacea at CityCenterDC this summer. This workshop will teach participants how to incorporate echinacea into summer gardens. REWILD will educate participants on why echinacea is such a great native pollinator, and how you can best care for it.

CALABASH Tea & Coffee, a wellness brand designed to reconnect modern people with food and drink as medicine, will pop up at the CityCenterDC Farmers Market beginning on June 14th. You can find teas and beverages that use echinacea at the CALABASH pop-ups.”
