“Is it just me or has there been a rise in spam texts in recent months?”

“Dear PoPville,

Is it just me or has there been a rise in spam texts in recent months? I seem to receive one every other day from different numbers. I wanted to see if other DC residents have experienced this too.

Perhaps the freakiest text I’ve received recently was someone claiming that they met me at Artechouse DC and that they were in need of cash desperately ($500).

The funny thing is that I did go to Artechouse recently but I have no recollection of meeting anyone there. Kinda creeped out. I’ve also been getting a bunch of those subscription spam texts, one of which seemed to come from the Passport DC event. When I clicked on the link in the text, it took me to a website where I saw tickets being sold to the event for $60 when in fact, I knew the event in past years has always been free.

They say that you shouldn’t respond to these spammers but unfortunately I have responded back saying “STOP” on more than one occasion to unsubcribe only to be later bombarded with lots more junk messages. People don’t @ at me in the comments please! I know that was a dumb move now! Have other people received these types of texts too? How do people deal with spammers? Do you just block their numbers or simply ignore them? I’m so sick of all these fraudulent messages.”

Join local sketch comedy legends (in our own minds) Brick Penguin for an evening of live, dark, rip-roaring sketch comedy. See D.C.’s longest-running sketch comedy group do what they do best, when they’re not performing across the country in places such as the terrifying Philadelphia, the gooey Chicago, the M&M Store-y New York City, and the crunchy Seattle.

Now, our last show may or may not have mentioned Taylor Swift, and we may have gotten into some trouble from confused Swifties who thought they scored a $15 ticket to a Taylor Swift concert. So, to apologize and clear up any confusion, we’ve decided to dedicate another show to her. We promise she might or might not appear this time.
