DEVELOPING: Multiple Shots Fired in Van Ness

First report from a reader at 3:23pm: “Omg!! Sounds like continued gunfire! Sounds like up by Van Ness/Univ of DC (also Chinese Embassy area). Lots more cops.”

3:31pm “heard lots of bangs that sounded like gun shoots near Connecticut and Van Ness. A dozen or more cop cars and emergency vehicles are hauling it down the street. Any word??”

4:04pm udpate: “MPD is responding to active threat at 4101 Connecticut Avenue NW. Expect heavy police presence and road closures. Please avoid area, and shelter in place if you are nearby. Updates to follow.”

4:18 PM Update from MPD: “The location of this incident is 2900 block of Van Ness Street, NW. Police are in the area conducting active sweeps.

Residents in the Cleveland Park and Van Ness area should shelter in place.”

4:27 pm Update from MPD: “There have been at least 3 victims located of two adult males and one juvenile female.

Please continue to avoid the area and shelter in place.”

4:58pm:

5:50pm: “Police just said they confirmed some people running we’re not the shooter and have no suspects in custody at this time.”

4:38pm Safety Alert: “MPD is responding to an active threat at the 2900 Block of Van Ness, NW. Please continue to avoid the area. Residents in the Cleveland Park and Van Ness neighborhoods should shelter in place. If anyone in the area of this incident has any information, please call (202) 727-9099 or text 50411.”

From MPD: “MPD is responding to the 4100 block of Connecticut Avenue, NW for the report of at least 2 shooting victims. There is a large police presence in the area. Updates will follow.”

Alan Henney is reporting:

“NOW REPORTED TO BE AN ACTIVE SHOOTER— Suspect reported to be shooting from apartment building on Van Ness St near Connecticut Ave NW DC. EMS coming for one person reported shot.”

From DC Police Traffic: “FYI: Police Investigation in the area of Connecticut Ave and Van Ness St NW Avoid the Area / Expect Street Closures & Watch for Authorities’ directions”

One resident reports 50-100 shots fired.

UNCONFIRMED report of 4-5 people shot. Again, that is a resident report and not officially confirmed at this moment.

Update 4pm “Down the block a bit. So many cops and ambulance busses. Saw an armored truck go by.”

A reader reports: “Truck that said mass casualty unit on the side just went up Connecticut, a red truck have never seen it before in all these years.”

“Walking up Connecticut Ave near DuPont. At least 40 police vehicles have passed me, including mass casualty unit.”

“I was in the park by Burke school and heard them. So many shots so rapidly fired, I would def say automatic or semiautomatic.”

“My roommate works at Burke school and they’re on lockdown. Glass was broken at the school and two kids are being treated from the broken glass. Lots of gunfire”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
