“Please support these kids” (Capitol City Robotics World Championship Fund)

via GoFundMe

“Dear PoPville,

I’m writing on behalf of Capitol City Robotics (CCR), a 501(c) non-profit that provides underrepresented students access and education to STEM principles through robotics engineering and computer science. Its vision is to create a future where science and robotics careers are a place for everyone, regardless of gender, race, or economic background.

In March, eight (yes, 8!!) CCR teams qualified for the world championship this year, including five all-female teams. The CCR teams represent one high school team, three middle school, and four elementary school teams from DC public and charter schools in wards 4 and 5. This is an amazing accomplishment for a grassroots organization that formed less than five years ago. The teams will compete with the best teams from around the world in timed, skills-based robotics events using their custom-built robots. The world championship attracts more than 30,000 attendees with 1,400 students competing from all 50 states and more than 70 nations. The competition will take place in May in Dallas, TX and will be in-person for the first time since 2019.

Capitol City Robotics is launching its General Fund Initiative to help the students meet their targets to be able to attend the tournament. In addition to the 37 team members, we have over 40 coaches, mentors, parents, and family members accompanying them. Please consider donating to our fund and sharing this link. The $10K goal represents only about 20% of what we need to raise to pull this off!

While I’m at it, I also want to give a shout-out to three local businesses who have shown us some love: Atxondo, Moreland’s, and Little Coco’s. Thank you!

The kids are very excited about their upcoming adventure and we’d be grateful for community support as they embark on the next phase of their competition. This is a success story and an incredible achievement for our students, our schools, and the city.

Go CCR!

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
