“Dear PoPville,
I am wondering if someone can give me information on what the “period remaining value” means in your WMATA balance?
Like a lot of people, I stopped filling my SmartBenefits order/tax free method of loading mySmartTrip card in April 2020. I’ve only ridden the metro/bus a handful of times since then and when I tapped my card last time, the turnstile indicated that my current balance on the card was over $1,000!
I reviewed my paystubs and bank account and it does not appear that anything has been taken out over the last year for transit benefits or to fill the card. When I check the WMATA website it indicates that my “stored value” is $11 but the “period remaining value” is $1,000. I’m moving out of DC in August would love not to leave $1000 behind on my Smartrip card, but I have no idea if that is the true balance or where it would have come from. Any insights into what these amounts mean and where this possibly excess balance came from? I can’t get an answer from WMATA’s website.”
