“Green Almond Pantry, the Mediterranean cafe counter and market from chef/owner Cagla Onal, reopens in Georgetown” Today!

3210 Grace Street, NW

From a press release:

“Green Almond Pantry, the Mediterranean cafe counter and market from chef/owner Cagla Onal, reopens in D.C.’s historic Georgetown neighborhood today following a fire that shuttered its Shaw storefront in December 2020. Located within the Grace Street Collective at 3210 Grace Street NW, the new location offers nearly double the seating and takes advantage of an open kitchen concept to bring forward Onal’s love for simply prepared, high-quality ingredients.

“In a way, Georgetown’s Rose Park farmers market is where it all started, so it’s like we’ve come full circle,” says Onal, whose first name roughly translates to “green almond” in her native Turkey. “And with spring here and all the beautiful ingredients that come with the season, this just feels right. We’re really excited to be back and to be cooking again.”

The rotating menu will feature a mix of Green Almond Pantry classics – including freshly made focaccia, salads and dips, sandwiches, braised lamb and roasted fish, and an array of cakes served by the slice or whole – and daily chalkboard specials inspired by each morning’s deliveries from local farmers and purveyors. Grilled lamb, fish and other meats make their debut thanks to a gas-fired grill in the new space, with a selection of beer and wine that both complement the counter’s seasonal dishes and spotlight the team’s latest favorites is expected in the coming days. Additionally, the market selections reflect some of Onal’s personal pantry must-haves: tinned fish, imported grains, olive oil and vinegars, specialty herbs and more. All other items are intended to be enjoyed in the first-come, first-serve indoor/outdoor seating throughout the Grace Street Collective or for takeaway.

The concept for Green Almond Pantry took root in 2017, when it started as a farmers market stall before eventually landing its 8-seat counter location in Shaw a year later. In 2020, Onal was nominated for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic by the James Beard Awards.

At opening, Green Almond Pantry hours will span Thursday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., with additional hours forthcoming this summer and delivery service available through greenalmondpantry.com.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
