“Florida Avenue-New York Avenue NE Intersection Project (“Dave Thomas Circle”) 65% Design Public Meeting” is Monday

From DDOT:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will host a public meeting on Monday, May 17, 2021 to discuss the 65-percent design plans for the Florida Avenue-New York Avenue NE Intersection Project. DDOT is redesigning the intersection, often referred to as “Dave Thomas Circle” or the “Virtual Circle,” to make it safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers in support of Mayor Bowser’s Vision Zero initiative to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities on the District’s roadways. Once complete, the redesigned intersection will:

  • Realign and add two-way traffic to First Street, NE;
  • Restore two-way traffic on Florida Avenue, NE;
  • Add protected bicycle lanes;
  • Make other improvements benefitting safety and legibility for all modes of travel; and
  • Create three new public park spaces.

DDOT partnered with the NoMa Business Improvement District (BID) and NoMa Parks Foundation, which hired a landscape architecture firm to design thoughtful, innovative public spaces. The public space design has been incorporated into the design of the intersection.

The meeting will consist of a presentation given by DDOT staff, the project team, and partners, followed by a question and answer session. DDOT will provide a format to submit written comments after the meeting.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
