So Remember That Car That Crashed Into the Lobby of The Drake?

17th and Massachusetts Ave, NW

Thanks to Alex for passing on this email from The Drake:

“Firstly, we would like to thank you all for your well wishes during the events of last week. We all appreciate you thinking about us during what turned out to be an unexpectedly dramatic day. Except for being a little shaken up, we are all doing well. We are also happy that our building was quickly secured with a temporary door and we are able to get back to normal!

Now that we have a better picture of the events of that day, we wanted to provide you with an update.

We had a person apply for an apartment with us. Like when each of you applied, we requested to see his proof of income. He did not want to provide that and canceled his application. Several days later, he asked us to re-consider his application, but still was not able to provide the information needed as proof of income. He was not happy with the outcome and sent a series of e-mails over the weekend of March 20 that showed his mental state was unstable. Following receipt of his emails, we immediately worked to increase security at the property. Unfortunately, he visited the office twice last Monday and the second visit is when he crashed his car into our lobby.

After leaving The Drake, he visited a Verizon store in Virginia and crashed his car through their storefront as well. Eventually he was arrested in North Carolina for a traffic violation where it was discovered that he had three warrants out for his arrest from various states. The DC Police Department advised us of this late last week, and we have since confirmed that he is currently in a North Carolina jail, awaiting extradition to the other states. Eventually, he will be facing charges in DC.

We feel fortunate we were able to secure the front door the very same day. We also provided extra security personnel to assist through the chaotic period and the police increased their patrols in the area until we were informed of his arrest. We met with several contractors last week and are finalizing plans for permanent repairs. We will keep you apprised as these repairs affect the egress to the building.

We can all breathe a sigh of relief knowing that he will not be able to return to the area for years. Please let us know if you have any questions, and thank you again for your support.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
