Update on the Rehabilitation of Broad Branch Road NW

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT), in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS), has released the Final Environmental Assessment (EA) and the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Rehabilitation of Broad Branch Road, NW (proposed action). The proposed action involves the rehabilitation of 1.5 miles of Broad Branch Road, NW between Linnean Avenue, NW and Beach Drive, NW. The proposed action will improve roadway and drainage infrastructure conditions, enhance safety operations for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians, improve intersections and provide ADA-compliant sidewalks for the entire length of the corridor.

The Revised Draft EA was released for public comment on October 16, 2020.

The Final EA was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) and in compliance with all applicable environmental laws and executive orders. After thorough review and consideration of comments received from the public, Federal and local agencies, and stakeholders on the Revised Draft EA, Build Alternative 3 Modified has been identified as the Preferred Alternative (PA) in the Final EA and FHWA’s decision document, the FONSI. The selection of the PA was based on the improved roadway, stormwater and drainage infrastructure while minimizing impacts to the natural environments and adjoining properties owned by the Federal government and several Sovereign Nations. In doing so, the PA best meets the purpose and need of the project. The PA would provide two 10-foot-wide travel lanes, standard curb and gutter, ADA-compliant sidewalks, new drainage infrastructure, and replacement of the Soapstone Creek culvert.

The release of the Final EA and FONSI completes the NEPA process for this project. In order to reduce the risk for COVID-19 (as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and Mayor Bowser’s current Coronavirus Guidance, a complete digital copy of the Final EA and FONSI; including all technical appendices are available on the project website for downloading: www.broadbranchrdea.com.
