Every year we do a post around this time to remember the restaurants/bars/retail that have closed over the last 12 months. It is an awful post and I hate doing it but I do it to remember what/who we have lost. Now, is not the time for such a post. We know tons of spots have closed. I post them every single day. It is still, sadly, fresh. We are in the middle of a battle, we shall mourn the lost when the war is over. But for now – we must focus our attention on those fighting to survive the awfulness that has been 2020. Which by the by does not magically end as the calendar flips to 2021, obviously. So let us take this opportunity to call out the local restaurants/bars/retail fighting to survive who could use all of our support.
We know many spots are taking a winter pause but many spots are also remaining open. So let’s show them some love and commit to continue to support them over the winter, whether it is eating on their patios, ordering take out, buying new and used books from your local bookstore, beer from your beer store, local beer and booze from your favorite local brewery/distillery, toys from your local toy store, flowers, merch, cards, art, whatever way you want to support local. It is not just a catch phrase. Walk around your neighborhood. You can see who is open. They all need your help. We as a community must come together to support them so they can be with us on the other side. We must help as much as we can before it’s too late.
To those who have closed this year, we miss you, truly we do. We will properly bid you farewell when the time comes. Many of you are my friends. I don’t mean to dismiss the pain. But now is the time to circle the wagons. Let us fight as best we can to save the rest of those who make our neighborhoods, our city, our District the best place to live.
