Pear Plum Cafe Closes and is replaced by Bold Fork Books in Mount Pleasant

3064 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW

Pear Plum Cafe opened in the former Flying Fish Coffee and Tea space back in 2017. Pear Plum’s website says:

“We are overjoyed to announce that Bold Fork Books, a culinary bookshop that carries a diverse range of cookbooks, beverage books, and food writing, will be setting up shop permanently this month in the front of the Pear Plum space.

During these uncertain times, we have been exploring ways to evolve at Each Peach and Pear Plum which work for both us as a business and our wider community. Closed in our capacity as a cafe since late March, we’ve decided to use the shake up as an opportunity to grow the Pear Plum space into something open to other cool entrepreneurs in the city.

Enter Bold Fork Books, a young DC business curating collections that celebrate voices and food traditions from around the globe, as well as communities here at home. Owner Clementine Thomas has spent her career in DC restaurants, and she launched Bold Fork Books with the aim of bringing together the city’s groups of home cooks and industry professionals to share the books, writers, and stories that inspire them.

Clementine has been experimenting with her amazing pop-ups at Pear Plum Cafe over the past several months. It’s been a great experience, and we both feel now is a natural time for Bold Fork Books to take up residence in a permanent capacity. This organic collaboration is an exciting next step for our two businesses. This means Bold Fork Books will populate the front of our space with a vibrant collection of food books and accessories. It also means that Pear Plum Cafe will no longer be serving coffee or acting in a cafe capacity. We will, however, continue to operate our bakery in the back, turning out delicious baked goods for Each Peach Market next door.

Cultivating this community feels especially important at a moment when people are spending more time in their own kitchens and thinking more critically – and expansively – about the voices that guide them. Clementine is driven by the belief that stories about food can help us better understand ourselves and the world we live in, and we are so delighted by her passion and amazing book collection.

While it may be a little sad that Pear Plum is no longer serving coffee, we are so excited to infuse new energy into our space, and support Clementine and Bold Fork Books as they launch in a more permanent capacity. Make sure you stop by to check out her amazing collection, and say hello to us!”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
