“basically all of the hair care products targeted towards Black people were locked up behind a glass door, but all of the products targeted towards white people were out in the open”

“Dear PoPville,

I was at the H St Walmart on Friday and I noticed that in the shampoo aisle, basically all of the hair care products targeted towards Black people were locked up behind a glass door, but all of the products targeted towards white people were out in the open. It had nothing to do with price or size of item.

I feel like it implies that they think Black people are more likely to steal products, which is outrageous. I took a picture so you can see it (above); the shelf on the left with the Black products is locked up and the shelf on the right is not. I’m sure it hasn’t changed over the weekend if you want to go see it yourself too.

I googled it, and it seems like this has been a problem at other Walmarts in California, NY, and Virginia.

After people complained about the NY store, they removed the glass, so drawing public attention to it works.”
