Multiple Shootings including homicides over the Weekend

From Council Member McDuffie’s office: “Shooting in Ivy City: Okie Street NE is blocked off between the 1300 & 1500 block. Multiple victims appear to have non life threatening injuries. We will provide updates as information becomes available.”

“Update: Unfortunately, one of the victims has succumbed to their wounds and has been pronounced dead. We will provide additional updates as MPD makes them available to the public. Anyone with information is asked to call @dcpolicedept at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.”

Update from MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Fifth District and Homicide Branch announce an arrest has been made in reference to an Assault with Intent to Commit Robbery that occurred on Sunday, February 23, 2020, in the 1300 block of Okie Street, Northeast.

At approximately 2:22 pm, the suspects, who were in a vehicle, approached the victim at the listed location. The suspects exited the vehicle and approached the victim in an effort to take the victim’s property. One of the suspects brandished a handgun. A struggle ensued in which the victim took the handgun and shot both suspects. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the suspects to an area hospital, where one suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The second suspect was treated for non-life threatening injuries and placed under arrest. A third victim was also treated at a local hospital for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

The decedent has been identified as 20 year-old Daniel Jackson, of Southeast, DC.

On Sunday, February 23, 2020, 21 year-old Dominique Davis, of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Robbery.

This case remains under investigation.”

From MPD:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday, February 22, 2020, inside of a residential building, in the 6000 block of 13th Street, Northwest.

At approximately 5:02 pm, members of the Fourth District responded to the 6000 block of 13th Street, Northwest, for the report of sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located two juvenile males, and an adult female, inside of a residence, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services (DCFEMS) responded to the scene and found that one of the juvenile males displayed no signs consistent with life. The victim remained on the scene until being transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The second juvenile male and adult female were transported to an area hospital for treatment. After all lifesaving efforts failed, the second juvenile male was pronounced dead.  The adult female was treated for non-life threatening injuries. Investigation at the scene revealed that the offense occurred inside of the residential building.

The decedents have been identified as 17 year-old Wilfredo Torres and 16 year-old Jaime Zelaya, both of Northwest, DC.

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for each homicide committed in the District of Columbia. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by sending a text message to 50411.

“On February 22, 2020 at 427 pm in the 700 block of Farragut St, NW, two complainants stated that after a verbal altercation with two suspects, those two suspects fired guns at them before fleeing in grey Kia Soul eastbound in the 700 block of Gallatin Street NW. No one was injured, but two vehicles were struck in the 5000 block of 7th Place, NW.

The vehicle was described as a dark gray Kia Soul, unknown tags, occupied approximately 4 times (2 males & 2 females).

S-1: Black males, approximately 20 years old, grey jacket and black hat

S-2: black males, approximately 20 years old, bright green hooded jacket with the hood up.

This case is under investigation by the Fourth District Detectives Office. Any information please contact 202-727-9099.”

“On February 23, 2020 at 816 pm, the Fourth District responded to a call for the sounds of gunshots in the 3700 block of 8th St, NW. V-1 was approached by a man with a gun and V-1 fought off the attack. S-1 shot at V-1 grazing him, causing minimal, non-life threatening injuries. The suspect fled on foot south in the 3700 block of 8th Street towards Georgia Ave, NW. The suspect was described as a black male, 6″1″, late 20s wearing all black and a mask.

This case is under investigation by the Fourth District Detectives Office. Any information please contact 202-727-9099.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
