“Volunteers needed to help feed DC homeless Wed. Dec. 18” (Tomorrow!)

“Dear PoPville,

Come join your fellow DC residents in an evening of service to this city’s homeless and hungry, and have a great time too!

DC homeless center Charlie’s Place is providing a Christmas dinner for the homeless on Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. We need volunteers help prepare and/or serve the meal, set-up the space and clean up afterward – you’re welcome to participate in whatever you can make time for. We work to provide a welcoming and festive atmosphere for both our clients and volunteers each Christmas, and this year we’ll also have St. Margaret’s Choir singing Christmas carols during the dinner.

You can come for an early shift starting at 3 p.m. to help prepare the hall and the meal, and/or help serve the meal and clean up from 6-8 p.m. You can just show up anytime and our new Executive Director Reggie Cox (his journey from homelessness to leading Charlie’s Place was recently profiled in the Post) will gladly put you to work, but if you know you’re coming beforehand let him know at either [email protected] or (202) 486-0618. Charlie’s place is at 1820 Connecticut Ave NW.

Charlie’s Place has been serving the needy in Dupont Circle and beyond for 29 years, and we are one of the smallest homeless centers in DC, so your volunteer time will have a huge impact! The PoPville community has stepped up for Charlie’s Place in the past, with donations from readers covering all of last year’s Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners!

If you can’t volunteer for this dinner, you can always stop by to donate clothing – winter clothing is needed most this time of year. We’re open for drop-off from 7-10 a.m. Tue. Through Sat., or other times by appointment. And of course we accept online financial donations. Thank you, and we hope to see you on Wednesday!”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
