D.C.’s Greatest Pop Up Celebration is Coming Back to Shaw “the third annual Chai-vy and Cohen-y Hanukkah Bar”

From Ivy & Coney:

“Ivy and Coney, DC’s premier baseball bar, is proud to announce the third annual Chai-vy and Cohen-y Hanukkah Bar: Bar Mitzvah1. Bar. Mitzvah (We invite you to let our amazing wordplay sink in for a moment). From December 2nd through New Years’ Eve of the year 5780, the Manischewitz shall flow, the dreidels shall spin and fun will be had by all. While some may prefer their holiday festivities as “Christmas-with-a-baseball-twist”, we’re pitching ours as “Baseball-with-a-Hanukkah-fastball.” Simply put, it’s gonna be meshuga2.

In honor of our holiday that involves actual fire (not just some wimpy string lights and pine trees), we’ve added delicious latkes, sufgani-shots (jelly donut in shot form), 8-night fiery cider (Hint: it starts with fire and ends in ball) and Manischewitz’s finest kosher wines to the menu. Latkes, arguably the most important culinary creation since unleavened bread, will feature prominently as a reminder of both that the oil used to light the menorah in the holy temple and that fried foods truly are the tastiest. Each night we will be lighting the Hanukiyah at approximately 7:30 PM (December 22nd through the 29th) and invite our guests to participate.

1537 7th Street, NW

Twenty years before everyone’s favorite wood craftsman was turning water into rosé, he was officially becoming a man by having his Bar Mitzvah3. Bar/Bat mitzvahs represent the greatest (becoming an adult, gifts) and worst (voice cracking while you read from the Torah) of our youth. This year’s theme exemplifies the joy (and awkwardness) of these forgotten festivities. Decked out to look like your local JCC disco party, Bar Mitzvah will get you into the spirit to dance the hora AND the electric slide. To put the Mitzvah in Bar Mitzvah, we’ll be donating all proceeds from the sale of Manischewitz products to HIAS and hosting a holiday fundraiser for our Shaw neighbor, Bread for the City. So, while you’re stuffing your shayna punim with food and drink, it’ll all be for a great cause.

Most importantly, we will be unleashing the Boss of Balagan on our DC mishpocheh in the form of our custom-made shot menorah. The #ShotNorah (patent still pending) is designed for the enjoyment of eight guests at a time. The bartender will act as your shamash, pouring revelers a choice of shots. No kvetching about stains on your clothes will be allowed. What more can we say? Let’s make like a menorah and get lit!

December 2nd-Opening Party, bar opens at 6 PM
December 5th- Bread for the City Holiday Fundraiser
December 22nd First Night of Hanukkah, candle lighting, gift for all guests (while supplies last) December 25th Chinese Food and Movie Day

1 P.S. Due to the sacrilegious nature of the bar, all complaints may be sent to [email protected].
2 Yiddish translation guide: meshuga (crazy), Hanukiyah (menorah), shayna punim (pretty face, often said by your grandma while pinching you), menschen (doers of good deeds), balagan (mess/shitshow), mishpocheh (family)
3 Is this accurate historically? No, Jesus most likely turned water into a nice pinot noir rather than rosé.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
