“Rebirth of jazz at Takoma Station”

6916 4th Street, NW

From an email:

“Takoma Station Tavern was the site of a great jazz scene in the 80’s and 90’s, when jazz luminaries like Wynton Marsalis graced the stage and local jazz heroes like Paul Carr and Marshall Keys were a regular presence. In the mid-90’s, the club changed formats to R&B and go-go. But great jazz is making a return to the club, located at 6916 4th St. NW in Takoma DC near the Takoma metro stop.

With sponsorship from community radio station WOWD 94.3, jazz concerts have returned, starting with monthly shows on the last Sunday of each month. If things work out and there is good community support for this non-profit effort, concerts will expand to once a week. The next show features the Lionel Lyles Quintet on Nov. 24th, 6-9 pm. Future shows include the Lenny Robinson Exploration on Dec. 29, Todd Marcus Quartet on Jan. 26, and Kris Funn & Cornerstore on February 23. More info and tickets at Jazz Kitchen Productions.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
