“The dispensers carry humorous and uplifting messages to remind dog owners of their responsibilities.”

From the Mayor’s Office:

“This week, the Mayor’s Office of the Clean City is installing nine new pet amenity stations to expand the reach of the District’s “Pride Is Picking Up” education campaign. The bag dispenser stations will help remind dog owners to pick up after their pets, keeping their neighborhoods clean, safe, and healthy for people and dogs alike.

“DC is a city of dog lovers, but part of being a responsible pet owner is cleaning up after them and keeping our neighborhoods safe and healthy,” said Director of the Mayor’s Office of the Clean City Julie Lawson. “Pet waste attracts rats, pollutes our rivers, and can make other dogs and even people sick. By supporting residents and their pets with education and amenities, we can all do our part to build a stronger dog-friendly city.”

For the past year, volunteers with the Mayor’s Office of the Clean City have maintained 10 dispenser stations in all eight wards. Based on data collected from volunteers and 311 complaints, the office expanded the program.

The dispensers carry humorous and uplifting messages to remind dog owners of their responsibilities. Dispensers are now available in the following neighborhoods: Columbia Heights, LeDroit Park, 14th Street NW corridor, AU Park, Brightwood, Brentwood, Edgewood, Trinidad, Benning, Burrville, Capitol View, Marshall Heights, River Terrace, Rosedale, Anacostia, Bellevue, Fairlawn, and Fort Stanton. Dispensers are maintained by volunteers. Residents interested in volunteering should email [email protected].

The Pride Is Picking Up campaign is part of Mars Petcare’s “BETTER CITIES FOR PETS” initiative, in partnership with the Humane Rescue Alliance. By reaching dog owners through veterinarians, local retailers and pet service providers, dog parks, vaccination clinics, and social events, the initiative encourages the public to enjoy the District with their pets responsibly.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
