“Artist Robin Bell is presenting REFRACTIONS, a site-specific installation featuring projections, televisions, lights and prints at Lost Origins Gallery”

Courtesy Robin Bell

From a press release:

“In REFRACTIONS Robin looks back at the 20 years of his history of documenting the world as a filmmaker and taking actions as a social activist. Collaged images and videos of both the archival and newly produced for the show are displayed on televisions and projected on sculptures throughout the space. With mirrors, cameras and other technologies seamlessly weaved into the art pieces, Robin allows the audience to see themselves in the installations and invites them to reflect on their own space in society at an intimate environment of the Lost Origins Gallery.

Photographic prints of some of his iconic projection work from the archive are available for purchase for the first time. The installation pieces are also for sale.

Artist Statement

I have spent most of my life as a filmmaker. I still am one. Documenting things around me is a process of me figuring out how to participate in the world. The act of capturing the world and telling a story constantly changes me. It challenges where I stand and what to do next. The job as a medium, a storyteller is a transformative one by nature.

In physics refraction is the phenomenon when the path of light gets bent as it travels through objects. Rainbow is refraction of color wavelength. Eyeglasses refract light to adjust your eyesight. My work starts with sceneries captured with my eyes and lenses. It is an exercise of reimagining the world as we know it. It’s light traveled through me, you and everybody. It’s in the space between worlds.

In my show REFRACTIONS, I created a space where the audience is invited to be a part of the art pieces and examine the process of my transformation through artmaking. It’s a collage of my personal history and new creations carried out by old and new media for an intimate and immersive setting. We are living in and witnessing an extraordinary social environment. I want to invite you because we are in it together and our work matters more than ever. What we do matters. We matter. Future is uncertain but bright if we choose to shine a light on it.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
