“I am not sure why they felt the need to inject politics or “celebrity” into what has been a lighthearted neighborhood event.”

“Dear PoPville,

This weekend is the 3rd annual Best in Shaw Dog Show, which we have participated in each of the last two years. It has been a fun, community event and raises money for a good cause.

That is why it was disappointing to see the organizers recently announced that this year’s event will feature former Trump administration official Omarosa Manigault Newman as a “celebrity judge.”

I am not sure why they felt the need to inject politics or “celebrity” into what has been a lighthearted neighborhood event. Furthermore, who thought it was a good idea to feature a former Trump White House official at the *SHAW* Dog Show given that 93% of Shaw voted for Hillary, according to NYT election results.

Ms. Manigault Newman has repeatedly shown herself to be a career opportunist and provocateur. I have no interest in supporting her rehabilitation tour as she now claims to denounce the president she enabled for years. Unfortunately, we will therefore be sitting out this year’s event.

I’d also be curious to know if Ms. Manigault Newman is receiving an honorarium for her participation given that the event claims to raise money for animal welfare organizations.”

Ed. Note: I was a “celebrity” judge for this contest one year and did not receive an honorarium for participating. Full disclosure – I did get tons of dog kisses.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
