“HU Market & Deli has rebranded as Gorebet, which means neighborhood in Amharic”

From an email:

“I thought your readers would be interested to know that the market has rebranded as Gorebet, which means neighborhood in Amharic and reflects owner Neja Ali’s Ethiopian roots. In keeping with the warm and welcoming environment emblemized by its homemade sambusas — savory Ethiopian pastries stuffed with vegetables or chicken — Gorebet is further embracing its community by offering a variety of DC-made products. These include in-demand healthier and fresher options, such as:

  • Qui 2 Life, a woman- and minority-owned beverage brand offering locally made kombucha
  • Monkey, an affordable and nutritious grab-and-go bar that’s raw, vegan, paleo and Whole30-friendly
  • Fresh, local produce sourced from Community Foodworks’ farmers markets. CFW is a nonprofit organization dedicated to pioneering strategies for an equitable and resilient community-based food system. Their Pop-Up Fodo Hub delivers fresh produce to dozens of community institutions across the city.

Gorebet will also be the pickup site for the Market Share, a weekly subscription of fruits and veggies from area farms operated by Community Foodworks. For more information on the program, visit community-foodworks.org/marketshare, or contact [email protected].

Gorebet’s grand opening week begins on Monday, September 23rd, and will feature lunchtime demos that Wednesday (9/25) to Friday (9/27) by Capitol Kettle CornQui 2 Life and NATIVSol.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
