“Beginning at 8 p.m. on Thursday evening, May 9 through Tuesday morning, May 14 at 5:30 a.m., the span of Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway and the Rock Creek Trail by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will be closed to all vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.
Vehicular closures will take place between Virginia Avenue, NW and the Interstate 66/Potomac River Freeway interchange (behind the Lincoln Memorial). Pedestrian and bicycle closures will take place between F Street, NW (at the Kennedy Center) and the Roosevelt Bridge. Signage and safety officials will be in place to safely direct traffic in and around the Kennedy Center as follows:
-Drivers approaching from the north will follow a detour on Virginia Avenue, NW.
-Drivers approaching from the south will follow a detour onto the ramp that leads to Interstate 66/Potomac River Freeway.
-Pedestrians and bicyclists will follow detour signs at F Street NW at the Kennedy Center to Virginia Avenue and 23rd Street to the Lincoln Memorial.
Members of the public traveling in the Foggy Bottom/West End area between May 9 and May 14 are advised to plan extra travel time. Patrons holding tickets for Kennedy Center performances will receive email notifications advising of road closures, with directions for accessing Kennedy Center entrances and garages. The Kennedy Center is also accessible by Metro on the Orange, Blue, and Silver lines (Foggy Bottom/GWU/Kennedy Center stop) via a short walk or a free shuttle from the Metro stop to the Kennedy Center entrance.
The road closure facilitates the safe installation of a new pedestrian bridge over Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway. The pedestrian bridge is part of the Kennedy Center’s REACH expansion, and will allow the public direct access between the National Mall, the Kennedy Center, and the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge. The bridge will open to foot and bike traffic when the REACH opens to the public on September 7, 2019.”
