“Roosevelt High School Pool – open to the public?”

via DCPS

“Dear PoPville,

Councilmember Todd and I are leading an effort to obtain funding to open the swimming pool at Roosevelt High School for public use. If you are supportive of this effort, there are a few things you can do to help in the next few weeks, as the Council and the mayor determine budget priorities for 2020. The Department of General Services will need funding to construct a separate entrance for the public, and the Department of Parks and Recreation will need funding for staffing. DCPS would not be funding public access, and any public use would be secondary to student uses.

On April 4 and April 5, two relevant committees of the DC Council will be holding hearings about the budget. Details below.

If you want to help, here’s what you can do:

1. Tell me your views on this survey. We have more than 500 responses so far; with common themes that a pool would encourage exercise, minimize driving to pools that are several miles away, build community across neighbors, improve the relationship of the neighborhood to the school, increase foot traffic to the benefit of local businesses, and generally improve quality of life. We need as much support as we can get!

2. Share the survey with anyone who you think might use the pool.

3. Submit written comment to both committees – the information on how to do it is below at the linked pages.

4. SHOW UP TO GIVE ORAL COMMENTS IN PERSON. This will make the most impact. It would be great to have a cross section of the community – young adults, families, and seniors. If you have kids, fortuitously, DCPS is closed April 4 and 5, so you could make an outing to a hearing to show your kids how to engage with their government on something you and they care about.

If you are able to come to a hearing in person (April 4 is more important than April 5, if you are choosing), please let me know so I can coordinate the neighborhood’s effort, and keep you apprised of any additional information I learn about what time we would be likely to be able to provide comment. Please also feel free to reach out with any questions.
