7th Annual Dance DC Festival: Experience Global Movement Starts Friday at the Atlas!

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities is pleased to announce the 7th Annual Dance DC Festival: Experience Global Movement. Dance DC Festival highlights the District’s most talented folk and traditional dance and music performers from various cultures from August 20-22, 2010 at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. The genres include hand dance, African dancing and drumming, tap, tango, traditional Asian dance and much more! Performances as well as interactive workshops are FREE to the public over this three-day event!

This year’s Dance DC Festival opening night theme, Carnaval Africana!, will be held at the Atlas Performing Arts Theater on August 20th at 6:00pm. This night captures the essence of Carnaval fusing an array Afro-Brazillian dance and music expressions! The closing night party celebrates the native dance tradition of hand dancing, Hand Dance Mania on August 22nd at 7:00pm.

“It is the esteemed pleasure of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities to provide free performances and activities in the art of dance,” says Gloria Nauden, Executive Director of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. “From Tango to Hip Hop African and Swing, we’re proud to present some of the most talented performers in the District. Rich culture and experiences are exchanged through these dance traditions from around the world . Enjoy this weekend of art and physical fitness of world class instruction and presentations.”

Experience Global Movement travels the audience through the cultural dances of: India, Asia, Morocco, West Africa, Europe, Panama, Brazil, and more!

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
