From a press release:

“Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets presents its 9th Annual 17th Street Festival, a free community event celebrating the shops, restaurants, and services of 17th Street. The 17th Street Festival will take place on Saturday, August 25, 2018 from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. in the 1500-1600 blocks of 17th Street, NW. The festival includes a wide variety of street vendors, including artists, makers, entrepreneurs, nonprofits, kids’ activities and entertainment – rain or shine.

The festival will include more than 60 artists and makers selling everything from oil paintings to pottery, jewelry to cigars, and every creative item in between. Other vendors include area nonprofit organizations, local entrepreneurs, and the Kids Zone will have an inflatable slide.

Unique to the 17th Street Festival will be an all day “traveling” entertainment on the street, including a funk band, flamenco dancers with guitar, mariachi band, a Chinese lion dancer, and a New Orleans jazz band. We will end the day with a drag performance from 5:00-6:00 p.m. by Brooklyn Heights, a noted drag performer as seen at Town DC (now closed) and Nellies Sports Bar.

“Come and join us and bring the family,” said Bill McLeod, Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets’ Executive Director. “We have 16 great restaurants on 17th Street, most with outdoor cafes, so there is great food and fun for everyone.”

The 17th Street Festival was started nine years ago by Lee Granados, a long-time Dupont resident. Today it is organized by Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets, with major support from the DC Department of Small and Local Business Development, Hubert’s, Zico, Attache Housing, Elxel, Colonial Parking, Dupont Circle Citizen’s Association, Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2B, Stonewall Kickball, TD Bank, Friends of Stead Park, and the City Paper!

The mission of Historic Dupont Main Streets is to promote, coordinate, and maintain improvements of the cultural, economic, and environmental qualities of Dupont Circle to make it an exemplary place to live, work, shop, and play. Support the festival by making a donation and receive a discount wristband. Thanks!”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
