“Sugar Shack Shaw not keeping advertised hours?”

1932 9th Street, NW just south of U Street

“Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering if any of your other readers have had trouble with the Sugar Shack on 9th Street not sticking to their advertised hours (they are supposed to open at 6:30). This morning [Sunday] I tried to go get donuts at 7:50, and the shop was still dark and the door was locked.

This was after I tried to go a couple of weeks ago at 6:45 on the way to work, 15 minutes after opening; the door was locked but the front window was open, and when I approached the window to ask about the opening time the staff person standing there just turned and walked away. Very odd!

It’s a shame, because I love their donuts and it’s great to have a local shop nearby – but as one of the only decent places in the neighborhood that opens early, it’s disappointing to go and find the store closed two visits in a row. Just a heads up to anyone else in the same boat.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
