“Metro Transit Police arrest D.C. shooting suspect at Gallery Place Station”

From WMATA:

“Metro Transit Police officers on routine patrol at Gallery Place Station this morning spotted a suspect in a Northwest DC shooting that occurred yesterday evening. The suspect was taken into custody after jumping onto the Green/Yellow line tracks, causing rush-hour delays for hundreds of riders. A semiautomatic handgun was recovered at the scene.

The suspect was sought in connection with a shooting, investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department, that occurred in the 200 block of D Street NW (MPD Event # I20180425414). MPD described the shooter as a “black male, bushy top, grey t-shirt, armed with a gun.” Within minutes of the shooting, using the lookout from MPD, digital video technicians at the Metro Transit Police Security Operations Control Center discovered that an individual matching the suspect description had entered the nearby Judiciary Square Metro Station shortly after the shooting. The suspect’s photo was shared with officers from both police departments.

This morning, shortly before 8 a.m., MTPD officers recognized the suspect from the surveillance photo at Gallery Place Station. After transit officers began talking to the man on the Red Line platform, he jumped over the parapet wall in an attempt to evade officers, landing on the Green and Yellow line tracks below. The MTPD officers immediately called to have third-rail power taken down to stop trains and sprinted down the escalators to apprehend the suspect. He was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect sustained a non-life-threatening leg injury as a result of the fall and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Green and Yellow line trains were stopped for about 15 minutes while the officers and suspect were on the tracks. Customers with a registered SmarTrip card who experienced a delay exceeding 15 minutes will receive a Rush Hour Promise credit for their trip.

Additional information regarding the shooting case, including the name of the suspect, will be released by the Metropolitan Police Department in a subsequent news release.”
