From a press release:

“Blue Bottle Coffee announces the opening of a new cafe in The Wharf, Washington, D.C.’s newest waterfront destination. Guests can enjoy a simple and delicious cafe experience with single origin, blend, and espresso offerings, and nourishing menu selection while observing boats float through the channel just outside the cafe’s doors.

The Grand Opening of Blue Bottle’s Wharf cafe is Sunday, July 22. On Saturday, July 21, the cafe will host a Community Day, where the public is invited to enjoy a coffee, on the house.

Food and merchandise will also be available for purchase, and all sales will go to the cafe’s community partner, charity: water, a nonprofit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries.

Guests may also support charity: water by providing donations directly to the organization upon purchases at any Blue Bottle cafe in Washington, D.C.

WHEN Community Day: Saturday, July 21, 9 am-3 pm

Grand Opening: Sunday, July 22

WHERE 1 Market Square SW

HOURS 7am-7pm Monday-Sunday

DESIGN Every Blue Bottle cafe is built with an understanding of the surrounding environment, including its history, population, and geography. Cafes are both a unique representation of the Blue Bottle craft and a respectful tribute to the communities in which they are located. The Wharf cafe was designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson.

Simplicity makes space for depth. Using raw industrial materials like wood and steel, our designers introduced this powerful–if unassuming–aesthetic to this cafe, bringing spatial brevity to its streamlined spaciousness.

In this cafe, with its clean lines and glass facade, your morning cup becomes a focal point in your day (or the eye of a storm, depending upon your schedule). But regardless of what awaits you outside, we created the Wharf to be a place of respite.

TRAINING Each member of the Blue Bottle retail team participates in a rigorous and experiential training program, which includes over thirty hours of initial instruction before beginning to work in a cafe. The training sessions acquaint new team members with Blue Bottle’s core values of hospitality, deliciousness, and sustainability. The sessions also equip members with knowledge of the coffees they’re serving, the most delicious preparation methods for those coffees, and the tools to provide exceptional experiences for guests.

ABOUT Blue Bottle Coffee was founded by James Freeman in Oakland, California, in 2002. A self-declared coffee lunatic, James hand-roasted beans in a 183 square-foot potting shed and then delivered them to friends from his Peugeot wagon. Fifteen years later, Blue Bottle is now a small but mighty network of cafes in eight cities in the United States and Japan. Improbably and delightfully, the company continues to grow, but remains united by the simple purpose of sourcing and roasting the world’s best, most sustainable coffees and serving them at peak deliciousness.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
