MONDAY, MAY 7

TASTES LIKE IT SOUNDS:  Mixt&pe is a cocktail competition where local bartenders face off to see who can create the tastiest concoctions. The catch? Each mixologist has to pick two music albums, pick a song from each, and use them as the inspiration for the drink. It’s a good as it sounds (literally). (Service Bar, 7 p.m. – 1 a.m.)

PROOF: The play Proof won the Pulitzer Prize in 2001, and there will be a staged reading of the production tonight by the Shakespeare Theatre Company. The drama follows two sisters as they come together after the death of their father to settle his affairs and search for familial unity in the aftermath. (National Academy of Sciences, 7:30 p.m., FREE)

GET FUNKY: The Funk Parade is this weekend, but you can start getting excited now. The Kennedy Center will host a dance preview tonight that’s 100 percent funk. Come take a trip through time with the dance style that celebrates the history of DC’s music and arts. (Millennium Stage, 6 p.m., FREE)

MORE: Bike Commuting 101 (The Velo Cafe, 6 – 7 p.m., FREE), Sip + Savor Yoga Social Mondays (Wunder Garten at NoMA, 6 – 7 p.m., $18), Panda Bear with Geologist (9:30 Club, 7 – 11 p.m., $25), Kygo (The Anthem, 7:30 – 10:30 p.m., $55 – $75), Learn to Use a Sewing Machine (Petworth Library, 7 – 9 p.m., FREE), The Puppet Lobby (Brookland Artspace Lofts, 8 – 9 p.m., FREE), Revolution in the Air (Busboys and Poets – 5th & K, 6:30 – 8 p.m., FREE), ReDiscovery Reading (Shakespeare Theatre Company, 7:30 – 10:30 p.m., FREE), John Lewis Gaddis: On Grand Strategy (Politics and Prose: The Wharf, 7 – 8 p.m., FREE), Brandon Garrett: End of Its Rope (Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., FREE)

(Matchbox Vintage Pizza Bistro, 6 – 8:30 p.m., $65)

BEAM ME UP: Ready to ditch earth? Come to a talk tonight that’s all about Mars. One of the engineers from NASA’s Mars Exploration Program will talk about the group’s attempts to get humans on another planet, and the National Air and Space Museum’s planetary science curator will share the techniques used to map out Mars’s surface. After, stick around for a planetarium show all about the red planet. (National Air and Space Museum, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., FREE)

MY COUNTRY, MY LIFE: Former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak will be at Sixth & I to discuss his book, My Country, My Life: Fighting for Israel, Searching for Peace. Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
