From Blue Bottle:

“Blue Bottle Coffee announces its arrival to Washington, D.C., with three new cafes. Blue Bottle’s first D.C. cafe opened July 9 in the historic Georgetown neighborhood, located adjacent to the C&O Canal. Additional openings will include a cafe in the bustling Union Market slated to open in fall 2017 and a third cafe on The Wharf in the District’s southwest quadrant slated to open in winter 2018. Coffee for Blue Bottle’s D.C. cafes will be supplied by their new Bushwick, New York roastery, allowing Blue Bottle to fulfill its mission of providing delicious, sustainable coffee served at peak flavor.

“We’ve been so looking forward to bringing Blue Bottle Coffee to D.C.,” said Bryan Meehan, CEO of Blue Bottle Coffee. “We are often motivated by the poetry of a place and the intuitive draw of spaces that we encounter. We look for buildings and neighborhoods that tell a good story. We don’t want our cafes to ever be boring. In D.C., we were inspired by a community filled with interested coffee drinkers who are excited about specialty coffee.”

In its new Washington, D.C., cafes Blue Bottle Coffee baristas will serve beverages including coffee, espresso, Cold Brew, New Orleans-Style Iced Coffee; a selection of pastries including Liège wafels and toasts; and merchandise. Cafes will also host reoccurring coffee education classes taught by expert baristas where guests can learn about coffee brewing techniques and the nuances of different varietals and coffee types through coffee cupping – or coffee tasting – classes.

To foster neighborliness within these new D.C. communities, Blue Bottle will partner with local nonprofits during cafe openings where proceeds from a portion of the sales will benefit the community partners. For its public preview, Friends & Family Day, Blue Bottle partnered with Bread for the City – an organization providing food, clothing, medical care, legal and social services to D.C. residents in need. For Grand Opening on July 9, Blue Bottle donated 100% of proceeds to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) – an organization whose goal is to safeguard the earth. In a blog about the NRDC partnership, CEO Bryan Meehan writes: “Those of us who are privileged enough to have a voice must use it. It’s our obligation to those who do not. One of the voiceless is our planet.” (Read the full statement: bluebottlecoffee.com/frequency/our-fundraiser-for-the-nrdc). This was the first time Blue Bottle partnered with two charities for a cafe opening. The company donated $2,884.70 to Bread for the City and $6,645.69 to the NRDC.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
