“It is the last few days of Ramadan and we are hosting an iftar (breaking fast meal)”

Sherman Circle NW, Today at 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to let you know and invite you to a community iftar event my friend and I are throwing tonight in Sherman Circle. It is the last few days of Ramadan and we are hosting an iftar (breaking fast meal) with nibbles and a chance for the neighborhood to get together and understand muslim culture and tradition.

More info on the Facebook event page:

It’s Ramadan! Ramadan is currently being celebrated by over a billion people around the world – including many of our neighbors! We invite you to join us in a potluck iftar, the evening meal Muslims eat to break the fast after a full day of no eating or drinking. Muslims fast during Ramadan to help build self control, develop good habits, and control negative thoughts. Sharing meals is also a big part of Ramadan! Come out to hang with your friends and grab some grub, and perhaps also meet some of your Muslim neighbors and chat!

Our goal is strengthened relationships among all our neighbors. We believe by breaking bread together we can learn about one another and help dispell some of the stereotypes, fears, and negative feelings that may exist between communities.

Since this is technically a potluck, we’d appreciate if you could bring a small dish to share (but don’t let not having a dish stop you from coming!). As an fyi, many Muslims do not eat pork or drink alcohol. Sundown is around 8:35, and Muslims who are fasting will be breaking their fast then.

We look forward to seeing you!

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
