Support “DCPS high school students working in a studio with CUA architecture students to develop a “high-design” storage structure”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to tell you about a design/build project occurring at Common Good City Farm in the LeDroit Park neighborhood. This is a collaboration with The Catholic University of America,
Washington Architectural Foundation, and Common Good City Farm. DCPS high school students are working in a studio with CUA architecture students to develop a “high-design” storage structure. There’s a distinct need in the city to store the produce grown at our urban farms, and this is our pilot year to have students design and build a structure for that use. It’s a great program, and Councilmember David Grosso is a strong supporter. Please find attached some information on the project.”

If you’d like to support the project you can do so here:

“Thank you for your interest in the URBAN BUILD COLLECTIVE, a partnership between The Catholic University of America, Washington Architectural Foundation, and Common Good City Farm, are pioneers solving a common problem in the District. Ranked No. 1 for having the most community gardens in 2015, many Washington, D.C. organizations are forced to throw away a lot of their produce every year due to lack of having proper storage on site. Our design, PRESERVE+, is a sustainably designed, pre-fabricated modular storage facility serving three distinct functionalities: COLD STORAGE, DRY STORAGE, AND TOOL STORAGE. PRESERVE+ will be constructed by students at the Common Good City Farm in The Park at LeDroit in NW DC.

The URBAN BUILD COLLECTIVE team is building much more than just a storage facility; We are providing design services to nonprofit and community groups in Washington, D.C. who could not otherwise afford architectural design services with the ultimate goal of improving the city and its neighborhoods. Furthermore, this year’s collaboration with DIA: build, a design-build initiative emerging from the Washington Architectural Foundation’s highly-successful Design in Action program, invites high school students to participate in the design and construction of a community-based architectural project. Together, our project links high school students with architecture students under the guidance of professors, architects and other design professionals. Your support to the PRESERVE+ project will not only enhance the LeDroit Park neighborhood, but also support Common Good’s incredible mission in providing over 5,000 lbs of fresh vegetables and fruits annually for low-income families. Thank you for your generosity!”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
