“Underneath It All: An Underground Fashion Showcase, will celebrate the cultural and historical diversity of our nation’s capital”

DU

From a press release:

“Dupont Underground and the District of Columbia’s Commission on Fashion Arts and Events (CFAE) in partnership with the National Cherry Blossom Festival will hold Underneath It All: An Underground Fashion Showcase on April 15 featuring acclaimed local designers from across the Washington, D.C. area.

“The fashion industry in Washington, D.C. has significantly grown in the past few years, and we are elated to feature the outstanding work of our local designers. In 2015, the fashion economy generated $244 million in wages and created 7,500 jobs. We expect that number to rise as we continue to grow and attract new talent to Washington, D.C.,” said Christine Brooks-Cropper, President & CEO, DC Fashion Foundation and CFAE Chair. “We are also honored to be part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival and to have a national platform to showcase the District’s exciting fashion arts industry.”

During the closing week of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, Underneath It All: An Underground Fashion Showcase, will celebrate the cultural and historical diversity of our nation’s capital, while paying homage to the international relationships that built this festival.

“Not only are we proud to host some of Washington D.C.’s finest creatives here at Dupont Underground through such a dynamic event, but to be a part of a tradition as prominent as the National Cherry Blossom Festival is a sincere honor,” said David Ross, Managing Director and Board Member of Dupont Underground.

Each year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival attracts an average of 1.5 million attendees and generates an estimated $160 million in spending annually for Washington, D.C.

“The National Cherry Blossom Festival prides itself on showcasing the creativity and culture of Washington, D.C., and we are excited to work with the Commission of Fashion Arts and Events to include this unique fashion experience as part of our four-week-long springtime celebration,” said Diana Mayhew, President of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

The Commission on Fashion Arts and Events, established by the District of Columbia Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, is the driving force in promoting the fashion and beauty industries in Washington, D.C.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
