“Opening celebration October 29 from 12:00 – 4:00pm at the Mexican Cultural Institute
Don’t miss the Mexican Cultural Institute’s annual Day of the Dead celebration! This well-known community event is a quintessentially Mexican tradition and one of our most colorful displays of the year.
This year’s celebration will feature an installation piece by Mexican designer and creative director Luis Fitch. Fitch, the director of UNO Branding, will construct an altar-like installation evoking the aesthetics of papel picado, the festive punched paper often used as a symbol in Day of the Dead altars. It will be on view through November 14.
Additionally, the MCI will have a traditional altar dedicated to famed Mexican musician Juan Gabriel, who died earlier this year.
Juan Gabriel was one of Mexico’s most successful songwriters and vocalists. The traditional altar will also honor the lives of Teodoro González de León, Gloria Contreras, Luis González de Alba, and Ignacio Padilla. It will be on view through November 21.
The opening day celebration will take place October 29th from 12:00 – 4:00pm and will include a musical performance at 12:30. The two attractions will be on display to visitors and school groups during regular hours through their respective closing dates.
Luis Fitch will be giving a talk about his work as a designer and brand strategist at the institute on October 25th, where visitors will also be able to learn more about his concept design for the altar.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!
What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
