From an email:

“It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since Gumbo Records opened up here in Petworth. But time flies when you’re having fun, and we’ve had a lot of it this year.

This coming Wednesday, Oct 26th, we are throwing our 1st anniversary party, at Gumbo Lounge, from 7:30-10pm at 205 Upshur Street NW.

Last year at the opening party, we had a little friendly gumbo cook-off. This year, we’re gonna take it to the next level, with a cook-off pitting us good old ‘regular folk against local DC restaurant gumbo. That’s right! High falootin’ gourmet gumbo!

But in order to pull this off, we need YOU to enter the cook-off!

Folks, we got prizes lined up. And all entrants will get 5 free records out of our special gumbo anniversary collection.

So you can’t lose. Please invite any gumbo-loving friends to enter. RSVP here by Tuesday night, or hell, just show up with a pot of gumbo.

We’ll be serving gumbo, cornbread, and beer/wine, but please feel free to BYOB as well.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
