Proper 21 Properly Opening October 21

proper21
1319 F Street, NW

From a press release:

“Proper 21, brought to DC from the New York City restaurateurs that own Manhattan Proper and Proper West, will open to the public on Friday, October 21, 2016. Located at 1319 F Street [formerly Noelia], Proper 21 will be a high-end sports bar serving All American classics with a gourmet twist created by Executive Chef Edward Janda. Proper 21 is the third location of NIEUW Group Inc.

Like its predecessors, located in New York City, Proper 21 will serve contemporary American cuisine. The space will maintain the modern aesthetic and New York style of the Manhattan locations, which have best been described as Tom Ford meets Thomas Edison. Owner Will Strozier is responsible for bringing that aesthetic to life. The restaurant will provide the best audio visual for sports, corporate functions, nightlife and other events.

Providing the very best cuisine by using locally sourced and fresh ingredients, Executive Chef Janda will assist in yielding an offering that is familiar, yet unique and delicious. Menu items include Chimichurri Shrimp, Truffle Burger, Orecchiette Pasta, Citrus Salmon and Steak Frites. Proper 21 will offer lunch and dinner.

Janda learned about food from his grandfather at an early age, making classic Italian food with him from scratch for simple family dinners. His love of food began to grow when he started working in a small Italian restaurant in his hometown of Washington, NJ. In 2006 he enrolled at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City. Since then Janda has worked for the Jean Georges group, The Rose Group (a large private catering company on the Upper East Side), Fig & Olive in New York and Los Angeles, The Smith and Tavern on the Green. He joined the NIEUW Group in 2015, working closely with proprietors Rob Zahn and Will Strozier.

The beverage program will place a strong emphasis on brand recognition. The offerings will consist of a premium assortment of popular and small batch liquors, locally crafted beers and a quality wine selection. The wine program showcases wines from top regions in Italy, France and the United States. The beer program will be ever changing focusing on widely known selections, as well as locally crafted seasonal beers.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
