ARTIST ARRON DE LA CRUZ FROM A PAST POW! WOW! EVENT (BY BRANDON SHIGETA)

From a press release:

“POW! WOW!, the global art movement that celebrates culture, music, and art worldwide is taking over the District during the last ten days of May as POW! WOW! DC. Local, national, and international artists will convene to enrich and enliven area neighborhoods with their murals. POW! WOW! DC is lead by local artist Kelly Towles, along with many great partners and volunteers.

Of the 17 participating artists, at least four will represent DC, including No Kings CollectiveDecoy, and Matt Corrado. Other artists are flying in from as far as Hong Kong (Caratoes), Honolulu (Pro Gress), London (INSA), and Australia (The Yok).
In partnership with the NoMA Business Improvement District (BID), the majority of the murals will appear on walls in the NoMa neighborhood. This includes walls on or near Ibiza night club, 411 New York Avenue, The Crucible building, and 1215 3rd Street
From Towles:

“I wanted to bring POW! WOW! to DC because of the impact that street art has on this community. Art transforms the urban landscape, and this allows the public to watch those transformations and celebrate the process. It will be rad.”

OPENING CELEBRATION
In addition to the rare opportunity to watch street art in progress, DC residents will be able to attend opening and closing celebrations. The opening event will take place on May 21st from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the NoMa Junction lot at the intersection of 1st and L Street NE. The opening celebration will include live painting by participating artists, music from local DJs, and a local marketplace of food trucks, beer, and other goods.”

Q: What’s the best way to get to the new site?
A: NoMa Junction @ Storey Park is located at 1005 First Street, NE, at the corner of First and L Streets, NE. We recommend taking the Metro to the NoMa-Gallaudet U station on the red line. The Union Station Metro is also just a few blocks away. There are also several Capital Bikeshare stations located within walking distance. Please note that street parking is very limited and luck of the draw. We encourage you to take public transportation, bike, or walk if at all possible.

Q: Can I bring my own chair?
A: Yes, please do! NoMa Junction @ Storey Park is an asphalt lot, so we highly encourage moviegoers to bring low chairs, or blankets and cushions. It’s hard to enjoy a movie if your butt is asleep.

Q: Can I bring my own picnic, or do I have to buy from the food trucks at the event?
A: Please bring anything scrumptious that you’d like! All we ask is that you put any trash in the waste/recycling bins before you leave.

Q: Can I bring my own beverages?
A: Coolers are allowed, but we reserve the right to escort you off the site if you get too rowdy.

Q: What time does the movie start?
A: Gates open at 7 PM, and the movie starts at sunset. This varies depending on the month, but is typically around 8:30 PM.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
