6th Annual “Cheap Art” Sale in Mt. Pleasant on Saturday

CAS2015-Poster-06-sml

From an email:

“The 2015 Cheap Art Sale will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 12, at La Casa, 3166 Mt. Pleasant Street NW, in Washington, DC. This year’s sale will benefit An Open Book Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting literacy among disadvantaged children in the greater Washington, DC, area.

The Cheap Art Sale, now in its sixth year, gives shoppers an opportunity to purchase unique, inexpensive holiday gifts and one-of-a-kind items while supporting a good cause. Most of the art will be priced at $50 or less, and half of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to An Open Book Foundation. Participating artists include Bekka Barker, Ian Delaney Dougherty, Nico Fertakis, Tina Pell, Carol Petrucci, Alexandra Silverthorne, Cait Sherwood, Stephanie Vermillion, and photographers from the Smithsonian’s open darkroom. Drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, jewelry, ceramics, and needlepoint will be available for purchase. The sale will be held in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Washington, DC, a short walk from the Columbia Heights Metro station.

An Open Book Foundation promotes literacy among low-income children in local schools through author visits and other events. Rather than just distributing books, it ties books to visits by authors and illustrators. This connection ensures that children have an attachment to the books they take home, and the ones donated to their classrooms and library, which entices them to read. The books provided during these events are often the first books the children have ever owned. More information is available on An Open Book Foundation’s website, http://anopenbookfound.org/, and its Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/anopenbookfoundation.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
