From a press release:

“Kingman Island will soon be available for private rentals and special events. Union Kitchen and Living Classrooms Foundation are partnering to manage events on Kingman Island, which is located in the Anacostia River in Northeast Washington, D.C. The 145 acre park has hosted the Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival and has several trails open to the public. Recently, Kingman Island has been undergoing major improvements to create more trails and more access to the natural environment for visitors.

“Washington, D.C. has such great green space, and Kingman Island is one of the real hidden gems in our city,” says Union Kitchen co-founder Jonas Singer. “This partnership is great for all involved. By hosting corporate retreats, weddings, family reunions, and other events, Living Classrooms has a chance to gain more supporters and awareness of their amazing work while also informing more local residents about the great natural amenity that is almost literally hiding in our backyard.”

Kingman Island is home to over 100 species of birds, as well as turtles and other wildlife and a wide array of vegetation not seen throughout the rest of the city.

Living Classrooms manages the park and, together with Union Kitchen, aims to further engage the D.C. community by opening the park for private rentals, such as weddings, field days, corporate retreats, and other special events. All of the events will be Green, using compostable paper goods, providing recycling, minimizing use of power and gas, and providing a platform to educate attendees about the work of Living Classrooms on Kingman Island.

Living Classrooms Foundation strengthens communities and inspires young people to achieve their potential through hands-on education and job training, using urban, natural, and maritime resources as “living classrooms.” The partnership will bring more visitors to Kingman Island, of which even many District residents are unaware, while also bringing more attention and support to Living Classrooms.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
