From an email:

“Marvin [2007 14th St, NW], the Washington D.C. bistro and bar inspired by the transformative time D.C. native Marvin Gaye spent in Belgium, announces it’s 2015 Marvin Gaye Day celebration, marking what would have been the 76th birthday of the legendary singer.

The 8th annual Marvin Gaye Day celebration begins at 2pm on Thursday, April 2nd headlined with a performance by Gaye’s original band, The Marquees, a Marvin tradition since 2008. Joining them is soul singer Maimouna Youssef, who will perform a rousing tribute to Gaye and Tammi Terrell — Gaye’s duet partner on seven Top 40 singles including “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “You’re All I Need To Get By”. DJ Jaz Dux will spin Marvin Gaye and Motown’s greatest hits from 3pm-6pm and DJ Keenan Orr will take over after The Marquees play until closing.

Documentaries about Marvin Gaye will play continually throughout the day while neighboring vinyl shop, Som Records hosts a “Hitsville Pop-up Shop” at Marvin selling the best vinyl from the 1960s to the early 1980s from 2pm-close.

Marvin’s main dining room will also open at 2pm to accommodate guests for lunch and dinner, offering their full dinner menu. On the rooftop deck, happy hour specials will be available from 2pm-6pm including $4 Stella drafts, $5 rail cocktails, $6 wine by the glass and Absolut flavor cocktails, $9 house smoked baby back ribs, $6 mushroom croquettes and chicken fried oysters, and $4 frites.

In keeping with tradition, all proceeds from the day’s events will benefit The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, the beneficiary chosen by the Gaye family, and given in Marvin Gaye’s name.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
