I’m gonna start referring to Geoff Dawson as the Sultan of the Subterranean. Obviously he is successful above ground too but what I can I say, I like alliteration! When I spoke to him about his coming plans for the old Meridian Pint/Makan space in Columbia Heights, he mentioned that he is “all in on DC.” I didn’t fully appreciate to what extent he was in then but it’s starting to become clear now. The man is ALL IN on DC! Next up will be The Pocket:

In addition to Geoff, the team behind the Pocket will be the same team behind the coming The Porch and Pebbles in Columbia Heights: Rob Hess, Amy David and Arturo Magana.
Here’s a bit about their plans for the huge space. When I say huge, I’m talking 12,000 square feet. And in that 12,000 square feet you can expect NINE pool tables (each in their own distinct space, so definitely not one on top of the other.) You can expect 20+ televisions. You can expect TWO bars. You can expect a menu similar to the old school Mackey’s (for the new school who never had the pleasure, Mackey’s was located on L Street downtown and was FANTASTIC.) The menu “will not break the bank” and will offer burgers, wings, sandwiches, salads, seafood entrees (shrimp, crabcakes, fish and chips etc.) and will be available 7 nights a week.
For drinks there will be beer, obviously, drafts, bottles and cans and also cocktails – Guava mezcal, mojitos and more. You can grab a burger and a beer and watch the game, rally a big group, or head there for a date. They imagine space as pretty versatile – play pool, grab a drink and/or watch a game…
As I was heading out Geoff said to me, “we want to be here 20 years not 2 years.” And then he teased there were more plans to come nearby.
The Sultan of the Subterranean is just getting started here. He and the team are definitely all in on DC. And we are lucky for it.

Because SPIN has a huge kitchen and was quite beautifully built out, not much work is necessary on the space. So if all goes well they should be able to open in about 3 months.
SPIN DC opened here in December 2018.
SPIN DC closed here in June 2026.
STAY TUNED.
