“Mott’s Market, the beloved Capitol Hill corner store that neighbors rallied to save and restore, will celebrate its grand reopening on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at 233 12th St. SE, Washington, D.C. 20003, just south of Lincoln Park.
After more than four years of fundraising, renovations, and a lengthy permitting and approvals process, Mott’s Market is once again open for business. The grand reopening celebration will start in front of the Market and then move to the newly renovated back patio and will feature refreshments, entertainment for kids and adults, and a festive community gathering to mark the return of a neighborhood institution.
Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen is expected to attend, along with several Advisory Neighborhood Commission members. Market operator Peyton Sherwood, also known for St. Vincent Wine in Park View, will also be on hand to welcome neighbors and celebrate the milestone.
For more than a century, Mott’s Market has been part of daily life on Capitol Hill — a place to pick up groceries, grab coffee, run into neighbors, and share everyday conversation. When the store closed in 2022, neighbors banded together to purchase the building, preserve the historic corner store, and restore it for a new generation.
The reopened Mott’s builds on that legacy with groceries, coffee, sandwiches, wine, café service, and a welcoming patio designed to serve as a true neighborhood gathering place. The community-led restoration reflects a shared commitment to keeping Mott’s locally rooted and accessible for generations to come.
“Mott’s is here because neighbors believed that a corner market could be more than a store — it could be a place where community is built,” said Michael Skinner, President of Mott’s Neighborhood Market LLC, the organization representing the 94 neighborhood-based investors who now own the building in which Mott’s Market is housed. “This reopening is a celebration of everyone who contributed time, resources, patience, and heart to bring Mott’s back.”
“We are thrilled to welcome neighbors back to Mott’s Market,” said Peyton Sherwood, market operator. “Our goal is to honor the history of this place and create a warm, joyful space for the community to come together.”
