“Connecticut Avenue Deckover Update: DDOT to Implement Four-Month Nighttime Lane Closures Beginning July 9”

From DDOT:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will implement temporary nighttime lane closures of the underpass lanes (under Dupont Circle) on Connecticut Avenue NW, between N Street and Q Street, beginning July 9, 2026, for up to four months. The closures are part of the Connecticut Avenue Deckover and Streetscape Project and are necessary for crews to safely install the girders that will serve as the foundation of the deckover portion of the project.

The work will occur over a four-month period:

July 9 – July 30, 2026: Crews will install the girders, with nighttime only lane closures Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., and continuous lane closures throughout the weekend from Friday at 8 p.m. through Monday at 5 a.m.

July 30 – October 20, 2026: Following completion of the girder installation: Crews will begin deck forming, tunnel lighting installation, and fireproofing for the girders, observing the same closure hours.

Southbound through-traffic will be detoured via Massachusetts Avenue NW and around Dupont Circle, while northbound traffic will be detoured around the Circle to New Hampshire Avenue NW. The contractor will install signage and barriers along the route to help guide motorists through the detour. Motorists should plan ahead for adjusted travel patterns during the closure period.

Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the area and to follow all posted signage. DDOT thanks the public for its patience during this infrastructure improvement project.

The Connecticut Avenue Deckover and Streetscape Project will transform the corridor into a safer, more connected, and more vibrant public space by creating a new public space/deckover over Connecticut Avenue and enhancing the surrounding streetscape for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, residents, and local businesses. The project aims to improve accessibility, strengthen neighborhood connectivity, and support economic vitality while creating welcoming public space and modernized infrastructure in the heart of the community. Construction began in April 2025 and is expected to continue through summer 2027.
