“Dear PoPville,
A couple years ago, I randomly took a copy of Ann Patchett’s “State of Wonder” out of a Little Free Library in NW. I have my favorites but I can’t be sure exactly which one, or exactly when this was. Probably in Mt. Pleasant or Columbia Heights, circa 2024. Today I flipped through for the first time and discovered this beautiful handwritten letter from a grandmother to her granddaughter, Jackie, dated August 23, 2003, tucked inside.
It says:
My dearest Jackie, I would like to tell you about the Jackie I know. The day you were born, you put smiles on everyone’s face. You were just beautiful. As you got older, we all enjoyed your performances on glee. You even enjoyed it then. It was center room at that time. When you were older, I could see the love, caring and sweet person you were becoming. As a teen you bubble and sparkle like a rare vintage champagne. You make the time anyone spends with you fun. You give of yourself and that’s a wonderful thing. It’s a rare gift. I know whatever life gives you. You will take with both hands and keep on dancing. I am so proud to be your grandmother. Love you with all my heart.
I posted this on facebook, buy nothing Mt. Pleasant group, as well as reddit but I was hoping you might post it for more visibility, in case Jackie or someone she knows happens to see it. I’d really love to get it back to her if we can figure out who she is.
I think I speak for many of us when I say that I wish I had more letters from my grandparents like this.“
