ICYMI: Fences Go Up Around Freedom Plaza and John Marshall Park – “PLAZA BEAUTIFICATION AND FOUNTAIN REHABILITATION”

Thanks to everyone who sent photos yesterday:

“Just walked my pup through Meridian Hill/Malcolm X park and on the upper level there are fences that block off the railing that over looks the lower portion of the park and doesn’t allow you to go down the stairs.”

From the National Park Service:

“Areas of Meridian Hill Park closed for repairs
Date Posted: 12/30/2025
Alert 1, Severity closure, Areas of Meridian Hill Park closed for repairs
The lower plaza and areas surrounding the cascading fountain of Meridian Hill Park are closed while the park undergoes repairs. Sidewalks along W and 16th Streets remain open to pedestrians. A pathway between W Street NW, the James Buchanan Memorial, the Dante Statue, and the upper terrace is open but will close at a later date for work on the statues.”

“Dear PoPville,

It appears the long awaited repairs to the reflecting pool and cascading fountain at Meridian Hill Park may finally be happening sooner than we all expected.

Early this morning, fencing was erected around the lower tier of the park, and a handful of engineers and construction workers appeared to be surveying the park area, though I could not tell why.

The National Park Service website for Meridian Hill park shows an alert, as of today 12/30, that the lower plaza will be closed beginning “end of 2025” while “the park undergoes repairs.” It seems, based on updates to the NPS website that this may include the reflecting pool.

Does anyone happen to know the timeline, plans, and/or where the money for repairs came from?”

“Construction crews in the process of putting up fencing closing off stairs connecting upper and lower levels of the park. No signage indicating what it’s about. Too soon to be hopeful for fountain repairs???”

STAY TUNED.
